The towing capacity in an ad is a best case: the right cab, the right axle ratio, a light driver and an empty bed. The limits that actually apply to your truck are split between two places. GVWR and the axle ratings are on the certification label on the driver's door pillar; GCWR and the trailer rating are in the owner's manual or the towing guide for your exact configuration. They are worth five minutes, because once you understand them, the brochure number stops being misleading.

Four limits, one idea
Every one of these ratings answers the same question for a different part of the rig: how much weight can this part safely carry?
| Rating | What it limits | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| GVWR | The loaded truck: itself, fuel, people, cargo and the trailer's tongue | Door pillar label |
| GAWR front / rear | What each axle may carry | Door pillar label |
| GCWR | Truck and loaded trailer together | Owner's manual or towing guide |
| Trailer weight rating | The loaded trailer | Owner's manual or towing guide |
GVWR, gross vehicle weight rating, is the truck as a whole. Toyota's manual defines it simply as "the maximum allowable gross vehicle weight". GAWR, gross axle weight rating, is the same idea for each axle. It is the one people forget, and it is easy to break: a truck can be under its GVWR and still over the rear GAWR if the weight all sits behind the cab, which is exactly where a trailer tongue and a loaded bed put it.
GCWR, gross combination weight rating, is the truck and trailer together. Toyota describes the combined weight as:
"the sum of the total vehicle weight (including the occupants, cargo and any optional equipment installed on the vehicle) and the weight of the trailer being towed (including the cargo in the trailer)"
It is the limit for everything that moves when you press the throttle and everything that has to stop when you brake. Finally, the trailer weight rating is the "towing capacity" everybody quotes. Neither GCWR nor the trailer rating is on the door label; both come from the manual or guide.
How they fight each other: a real Tacoma
Take a 2024 Tacoma Xtra Cab SR5 with the long bed, model code TZNA40L-CRZSZA. Toyota's manual rates it to tow 6,500 lb, with a GCWR of 11,115 lb.
Now load it. Say the truck, with two people, tools in the bed and a full tank, weighs 5,000 lb on a truck-stop scale before you hitch up (an illustration, not a Toyota figure). Weighing it unhitched keeps the sum simple: the trailer's tongue then counts once, as part of the trailer.
| GCWR (Toyota) | 11,115 lb |
| Loaded truck on the scale, unhitched (example) | − 5,000 lb |
| Room left for the trailer | 6,115 lb |
| Trailer weight rating (Toyota) | 6,500 lb |
The truck is "rated for 6,500" and you are already 385 lb short, without anything unusual in the bed. That is not a trick. Toyota says the trailer rating "is calculated assuming base vehicle with one driver, one front passenger, towing package (if available), hitch and hitch systems (if required)". The towing number is a promise about a nearly empty truck. Load the truck and the GCWR quietly takes the difference out of the trailer.
What we would actually check
If you only do one thing, weigh the rig. A loaded truck and trailer on a truck-stop scale tells you more than any spec sheet. Weigh it hitched and compare each axle with its GAWR and the total with the GCWR; weigh the truck alone, loaded, for the GVWR.
Without a scale, start from the tire and loading label on the door. It gives the combined weight of occupants and cargo the truck can carry, which is your payload. Subtract the people, the gear and around 10% of the loaded trailer for the tongue. If there is anything left, check the trailer against the rating in our tables. As the Tacoma example shows, a loaded truck often runs out of margin before the trailer reaches its rating, and payload is usually where it happens first on half-tons; payload vs towing capacity goes through that in detail, and how much a half-ton can tow shows it on the F-150, Silverado and Tundra.
Ratings for your truck, by year and configuration: Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, F-150, Super Duty, Silverado 1500.
