Ford is simplifying the 2027 Super Duty engine list. The 6.8L gas V8 is gone, and so is the standard-output 6.7L Power Stroke. That leaves two engines in F-250 and F-350 pickups: the 7.3L gas V8 and the 6.7L High Output diesel.
The catch is in the 7.3L's new ratings. It goes from 430 hp and 485 lb-ft to 420 hp and 445 lb-ft, which is exactly the torque of the 6.8L it replaces. Ford told Pickup Truck Talk the change keeps the engine compliant with the latest environmental standards, and that the engine does not use a gasoline particulate filter.
| Gas engine | Power | Torque | 2026 max conventional tow |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 6.8L V8 | 405 hp | 445 lb-ft | 18,700 lb |
| 2026 7.3L V8 | 430 hp | 485 lb-ft | 22,000 lb |
| 2027 7.3L V8 | 420 hp | 445 lb-ft | Not yet published |

Will the 7.3L tow less?
We do not know yet, and neither does anyone else outside Ford. Towing ratings come from GCWR, axle ratios, cooling and frame, not from peak torque alone, so 40 lb-ft on paper does not translate into a fixed number of pounds. For 2026 the 7.3L was rated at up to 22,000 lb on a conventional hitch and 22,500 lb with a fifth wheel or gooseneck. Ford's statement stresses that the engine keeps its "best-in-class payload", and the 2027 Super Duty site lists 7,900 lb of maximum gas payload. It says nothing about gas towing.
"While this resulted in a minor adjustment to peak output figures, the 7.3L remains a leading gasoline engine in terms of displacement and real-world work capacity." Austin Solimine, Super Duty brand marketing manager, to Pickup Truck Talk
For buyers who were going to choose the 6.8L, this is mostly good news: the base gas engine is now bigger, with the same torque and 15 hp more. For buyers who paid extra for the 7.3L, it is a quiet step backwards.
The diesel side
With the standard-output diesel gone, the 6.7L High Output becomes the only diesel. That is also the engine behind the 40,000 lb maximum, which Ford still advertises for 2027 with the High-Capacity Gooseneck Tow Package. GM's answer for 2027 is 38,000 lb with its new 8.3L Duramax; see 2027 Silverado HD towing.
